It can be used to clean paintwork and glassware, as well as to remove resinous matter from knots before applying Douglas Patent Knotting. It is occasionally used as a fuel for heating and cooking. It is a denatured spirit that produces a pure flame. It is mixed with a small amount of Methanol and dyed purple to render it unfit for human consumption.
